1,800 Lbs of Alberta Bull Elk vs. IronHaven Heavy Steel: Solo Recovery with the 3,000 lb Winch Headache Rack

When a true Alberta giant hits the ground deep in the bush, the hunt ends and the real work begins. Customer Matt proves how American-welded structural steel turns a grueling recovery into a clean, push-button solo load.

Every big-game hunter lives for that electric, heart-pounding moment when the crosshairs settle, the trigger breaks, and a colossal monarch of the timber hits the grass.

Then comes the reality check.

An absolute giant Alberta bull elk tipping the scales at an estimated 1,800 pounds is an immense amount of dead weight. When you're miles from the blacktop in the rolling cutlines outside of Red Deer, Alberta, getting a massive animal of that scale off the forest floor and into a high-clearance UTV bed by yourself is nearly impossible without mechanical advantage.

“No ramps. No blown spinal discs. No winching an 1,800-pound bull flat against the tailgate until something snaps. Back the machine up, loop the line, hit the remote, and let heavy steel do the heavy lifting.”

The Rig: CFMOTO U10 Highland Meets IronHaven Fabrication

Our customer Matt from Red Deer, Alberta sent us these field photos that demonstrate why we build our UTV armor to commercial tolerances. Matt pilots a CFMOTO UFORCE U10 Highland edition—a powerhouse machine equipped with a full cab enclosure engineered for tough northern country.

Factory composite bed rails and light-gauge tubular racks fold the minute you put serious overhead pulling tension on them. When Matt outfitted his U10, he did not want cosmetic bolt-ons. He needed heavy-duty recovery armor engineered to take the torque of massive carcasses sliding up an angled tailgate.

He installed the IronHaven Fully Loaded UTV Headache Rack, equipped with our reinforced overhead winch plate and an integrated 3,000 lb pulling winch.

The Physics of the High-Mount Winch Headache Rack

Most hunters try to drag game using a standard receiver or bumper-mounted winch. The issue is simple physics: the pulling angle is flat.

A flat pull forces an 1,800-pound bull directly into the lip of your tailgate, digging into the plastic, pinching straps, and putting extreme stress on your machine's rear suspension.

The IronHaven Headache Rack completely redesigns the pulling geometry:

  • Simultaneous Lift and Pull: By mounting the 3,000 lb winch high on the cab-height rack, the line exerts upward and forward lifting force simultaneously. It lifts the animal's head and brisket up over the tailgate lip, allowing the mass to glide smoothly into the bed liner.
  • Bulletproof Rear Cab Protection: Huge bull elk racks can easily punch through expensive rear glass or poly windows during loading and transit. The IronHaven heavy-gauge laser-cut mesh shield creates an impenetrable barrier between those heavy tines and your cab.
  • Zero-Flex Gusseted Architecture: CNC-bent and heavily gusseted at every primary stress node, the IronHaven rack stays completely rigid under full cable tension with zero deflection into the vehicle body.

Built for Hunters Who Work Alone

We build bumpers, rock sliders, and headache racks for the hunters and operators who take their machines where tow trucks don't go and cell service doesn't reach. Seeing Matt's CFMOTO U10 Highland loaded down with an 1,800 lb Alberta bull is the exact reason we cut, notch, and weld steel to commercial-grade tolerances.

Congratulations to Matt on a once-in-a-lifetime harvest and a clean, safe solo recovery in the Alberta backcountry. Thank you for trusting IronHaven steel to haul your trophy out of the bush!
